For our anniversary, Chad and I did what any normal couple would do...got high and went to go see a Pink Floyd cover band at the Canyon Club.
This was our first experience visiting the Canyon Club, and based on the horrible Yelp reviews, I was apprehensive about going. Many of the complaints were about the food, but it’s hard for me to understand why anyone would want to eat dinner while watching a rock concert. I did see that Ambrosia is playing a show soon. I guess I could eat dinner while watching Ambrosia. Also, people seemed confused about the seating arrangements. Once again, I don’t understand why anyone would want to sit at a rock concert. Must be a generational thing.
Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by the venue. There is seating if you can snag it, but there is also a great big dance floor near the stage if you prefer to get up in the action. The people-watching here was some of the most bizarre I’ve encountered. I’ve never seen so many people in sweatpants at a concert before. Also, overalls seemed to be a trend. There were, not one, but two very fat men in overalls. Have you ever seen a man with no nose? I have. These are the kind of people you see at the Canyon Club, and it makes for a great show.

The first drinking destination of the trip was The Triple Door, an intimate music venue with acoustics that will BLOW YOUR MIND. We took the bus to avoid drunk driving and parking difficulties, and arrived right as the opening act, Kate Lynne Logan, began to play. I’m not generally into folky singer-songwriter types, so I was pleasantly surprised when I enjoyed her angelic performance. Maybe it was the acoustics, maybe the booze, but I’m guessing Ms. Logan is just damn talented. I enjoyed some chicken pot stickers as she played.
Vaden Todd Lewis came on shortly after. One song into his set, one of his guitar strings broke and he had to use Kate Lynn’s guitar for the remainder of the show. It was exciting being in that intimate of a setting, and the few technical errors only made the show more interesting, more human, and that much more memorable.
Aesthetically, The Triple Door is elegant and modern, without feeling pretentious. The starry black backdrop and vast stage enhance the majesty of the musicians. I don’t go to seated concerts very often, but given the nature of Vaden's performance, I didn’t feel any urge to head bang or stage dive. The waitresses are available when needed, but they truly don’t disrupt from the talent onstage. Cocktails aren’t terribly expensive, about $10 a drink and you have the option of ordering food if you get hungry.
